Capital on Tap business credit card review

Capital on Tap provides a business credit card and spending platform for incorporated UK businesses. For a trade business the relevant features are practical: cards for the people who buy materials, a limit per card, receipt capture at the merchant's counter, and a feed into your accounting software so the bookkeeping is not a Sunday-night job.

It is still credit. It suits a business that pays the balance from money already earned, not one using a card to cover a shortfall. If materials are being bought on credit because customer payments are late, the problem is the payment terms, not the card — fix the deposit and invoicing first.

✓ Pros

  • Incorporated trade businesses buying materials regularly and repaying in full each month.
  • Businesses with two or more people who need to buy materials.
  • Businesses that want receipt capture and an accounting feed rather than manual entry.

✗ Cons / who it may not suit

  • Sole traders — not eligible under current criteria.
  • Any business that cannot currently meet wages, tax, essential bills or existing commitments. Credit will make that worse, not better.
  • Businesses that expect to carry a balance month to month.
  • Businesses that only need spend control, where a debit expense card or prepaid card is a better fit.

What you get

  • A business credit card with a revolving limit set by the provider after assessment.
  • Additional employee cards, each with an individual spending limit.
  • Receipt capture against transactions, with reminders for missing receipts.
  • Integrations with common accounting software for automatic transaction feeds.
  • Rewards on eligible spend on some plans, where the account is managed responsibly.

How UK tradespeople use it

Material-heavy project purchasing

A kitchen or rewire needs several thousand pounds of materials before the second stage payment lands. A card with a known limit and a clean statement makes that purchase traceable to the job.

Employee purchases without personal money

Cards with individual limits stop the apprentice paying for fittings out of their own pocket and stop the 'lost receipt' write-off at month end.

Receipts captured at the merchant, not in a van footwell

Photographing the receipt at the counter is the only version of receipt management that survives contact with a working week.

Costs and risks

  • Interest is charged on balances not repaid in full by the due date. Carrying a balance can easily cost more than any reward is worth.
  • Fees may apply depending on plan, foreign transactions and cash usage. Check current pricing on Capital on Tap's own site.
  • A personal guarantee is required as a standard condition. The director is personally liable for the business's debt if the business cannot pay. This is confirmed by Capital on Tap's own website.
  • Missed payments can cost money and affect the business's ability to obtain credit in future.
  • Credit limits are set by the provider and can be reduced or withdrawn. Do not build a purchasing system that only works if the limit stays.
  • Rewards should never be the reason to spend. Spend you would not otherwise make is a loss, whatever the points say.

Representative APR

From 13.86% APR variable. Your actual rate depends on personal and business credit history and the Bank of England base rate. Check the current representative example on Capital on Tap's own application page before applying.

Eligibility

  • Incorporated UK businesses (limited companies and LLPs). Sole traders are not eligible under the current published criteria, so the application CTA is suppressed for sole traders across this site.
  • Business must meet Capital on Tap's own credit assessment and identity checks.
  • A director or authorised signatory must apply.
  • Promo code SETTINGUP must be entered in the promo field during the application.

Exclusions

  • Sole traders and unincorporated businesses.
  • Businesses that cannot pass credit and affordability checks.

Alternatives worth considering first

  • Business debit expense cardsIf the need is spend control rather than borrowing, debit cards with per-person limits avoid interest altogether.
  • Supplier trade accountsMerchant accounts with 30-day terms can cover the same gap, though they tie you to one supplier's pricing.
  • Bigger deposits and stage paymentsFixing the payment schedule removes the funding gap instead of financing it.

Capital on Tap promo code FAQ

What is the Capital on Tap promo code?
The code is SETTINGUP. Enter it in the promo field during your application and you get 7,500 bonus points (worth £75) once you complete your first card transaction within 30 days. Subject to eligibility and status.
Can sole traders use it?
No. Under the current published criteria the card is for incorporated businesses. Our system suppresses the application CTA and the code for anyone who tells a tool they are a sole trader.
Will I be approved?
We cannot say. Credit is subject to status and affordability, and the decision, limit and pricing are the provider's alone.
Is a personal guarantee required?
Yes. Capital on Tap requires a personal guarantee from a director as a standard condition of the card. This means the director is personally liable for the business's outstanding balance if the business cannot pay. Read it carefully before signing and take independent legal advice if you are unsure of the implications.
