Fact-checking policy

The four checks

• –Is there a primary source? Government, legislation, regulator or the provider's own published terms — not a secondary blog.
• –Is the source current? Rates and thresholds are checked against the version in force, and the check date is recorded.
• –Is the claim stated at the right strength? 'Often', 'typically' and 'in most cases' are used where the evidence supports a pattern rather than a rule.
• –Would a specialist disagree? Where a subject is genuinely contested or depends on individual circumstances, the page says so and points to professional advice.

Calculator formulas

Every calculator is built from a written formula, tested against worked examples, and displays the arithmetic behind each output.

Assumptions are listed on the tool page. Where a formula could reasonably be built another way — markup versus margin being the common one — both figures are shown rather than one being presented as the answer.

Reporting an error

If something on this site is wrong, tell us and it will be corrected. Errors on figures, statutory rates and partner terms are treated as urgent.
